Don't Tell The Dogs, But Obedience Training Is Good Exercise

I often ask the dogs to do a few minutes of a random mixture of "sit," "down" and "stand" when we are just hanging around the house. It is a great way to sneak in basic training and mental stimulation. Recently, while watching Brychwyn launch himself from a "down" to a "stand" and then crouch back "down" again, I realized that our rounds of obedience commands are also excellent fit dog time. All three dogs get a great chest, shoulder and hind quarter workout throughout the mix of basic obedience commands. So we went out yesterday evening and spent a few minutes doing sets of a mix if "stand," down" and "sit" to share for FitDog Friday. We didn't take photos of all the heel work! Which is obviously another wonderful way to get physical conditioning as well as mental stimulation for dogs of every size. In the slideshows and video you can see the great workout the dogs get as they move from one command to another. With at least eight to ten repetitions of each move, they get some outstanding fit dog time while working their brains too.

Please forgive that all three dogs and I are very out of practice doing our obedience in high distraction environments; my posture is terrible- as in not ring ready- and I did a lot of luring. But we had fun and got a good workout!
The Cascadian Nomads love FitDog Friday and are proud to have been a part of it for almost one year! Thanks so much to SlimDoggy, Peggy’s Pet Place and To Dog With Love for helping bloggers and readers learn SO much about fitness and fit time with their dogs. As always, you'll learn a lot from clicking around the blogs below. We look forward to many more years of learning and sharing.

Great display of dog obedience & your right - good to exercise every part of the dog's body - including the brain. Like your strong commands - i tend to rely too much on voice. no wonder my dog gets confused!! Happy FitDog Friday.....

My voice is terrible so it is really good that I was taught to teach hand signals... except for freestyle. Then I have to use more subtle cues or my shaky voice. You're right... poor dogs!

That is right and we love the fact that it gives the brain a work out too. Have a fabulous fit Friday.
Best wishes Molly

What a great way to exercise! I'm definitely going to begin doing this, especially in the house during the rainy spring days to come.

These random commands are great for the dogs joints on wet day too!

Obedience training does wear a dog out. Bailie has class every Wed. night. When she gets home she flops into bed into a deep sleep and doesn't want to get up in the morning. It is hard, especially for puppies to focus and concentrate for an entire hour, not to mention learning new things, but it is good for us. Nose work wears us out too mentally. Mom gets it as when we lived in Germany and she would start a new job she would be dead tired for several weeks, not from the job so much, but from the mental strain of the language and learning all the new language for that job. Great post idea.

Thank you, Emma! All the dogs have always been the most worn out after obedience classes, but it had never occurred to me what great physical exercise it is until the other day. I always just thought their brains needed a rest but I guess their bodies did too! I am impressed that Bailie makes it through an hour class- I never pushed Huxley past 45 minutes. He likes to work but when he is done, he's done.

Great idea and the pups look great! We love to mix it up on our walks too and do some attention healing and other basic obedience. It's a great way to work through things with distractions all around!

Excellent work. We kind of do this too - when I remember. It is such a good workout and as Emma said, a real mental challenge too. Thanks for joining the Hop - and being part of it over our inaugural year!

I find that Jeni is still ready to go after hours of physical exercise but 20-30 minutes of obedience training and she's ready to take a nap! Great photos :)

That is a great fun way to stay in shape. What they don't know, won't hurt them.

We're in the middle of learning to do these very things right now. My big dogs know the commands and will do nearly anything for a Jones chew, but Chewy is just learning. It's great for the other two, since we do command training more frequently.

Your dogs are so lovely. :)

I have Mr. N do random tricks around the house for entertainment purposes. He also gets a good workout. Hopping around the house is a lot of work!
