Every Nomad Needs A Place That Feels Like Home, Pets Too #DogwoodWeek10 Environmental

When my brother and I were in school full time, my family did most of our traveling in the summer. The annual forlorn feeling of saying farewell to most of my toys as we packed everything into another storage space quickly gave way to the excitement of a new summer of adventures on the road. While our travels back and forth across North America always included visits to various family and friends, it was when we arrived on the shores of Chautauqua Lake, New York, that young nomadic me felt at home. Once the family van was safely parked near the big white, bat filled barn at Bompa and Nee Nee's house, I didn't waste a second thinking about the stuff in storage thousands of miles away. The dogs and I splashed in the creek, ran in the grass, and lounged on the stone porch. At this young age I learned that every nomad needs a place that feels like home, pets too.

While I do not consider cages and crates to be the pet's natural habitats, they truly enjoy time in their own private spaces, at home or on the road. Photographing the pets in their place of work or hobby, which I hope the dogs, cat and cockatoo would agree is being out on adventures or at sports, is what I do all the time. Don't get me wrong! I love it. But photos of the pets at home, at rest, was more of a photography challenge. Plus, I captured these photos just before Jason and I left on the first pet-free trip we have taken in almost two years. It comforts me to see how relaxed these furry and feathery nomads are just hanging out at home.
Where do you feel most at home?

Pet Personality In A Photo: Dachshund, Corgi, Collie, Cat & Cockatoo Portraits #DogwoodWeek4 Headshot

Photographing three dogs while out on dog friendly adventures is enough of a daily challenge. When I throw adventure cat Amelia and traveling cockatoo Leo into the pet friendly outing mix, I very rarely get a picture with all five pets in perfect photograph form. But I do get a variety of group pet photos that display each pets individuality, serve the "we were here together" purpose, and give me a good chuckle. Perhaps it is the togetherness aspect of our adventures or that I am a glutton for punishment but I rarely photograph any of the pets alone. Shooting headshots for the Dogwood Photography 52 Week Photography Challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity to see what I could do with only one pet at a time in front of my camera. Any change in routine can be difficult. In this case, moving from photographing multiple pets to just one was indeed a challenge.

The first challenge for me this week was choosing the pet portrait location and best lighting. I toyed with the idea of shooting each pet in their favorite place but the lighting in some of those places would not make for the classy portrait the dogs, cat and cockatoo deserved. So upon settling on photographing the pet's headshots outdoors, it rained buckets for days. Then I got a cold. I also knew that getting the right angle and clarity in these photographs would take an extra set of human hands. And Jason did a lot of traveling for work last week. Photo challenge indeed! But at last, the sun came out, I was able to get out of bed, and the neighbor was kindly available to help pet wrangle. Like all challenges, the tougher it is, the greater the reward. And I absolutely love each headshot! Like an excellent portrait should do, these photos perfectly display the individual personalities of my beloved pets.

Selfies With Pets: Three Dogs, A Cat & A Cockatoo #DogwoodWeek1 Self Portrait

The 52 Snapshots of Life Photo Challenge last year did a lot to keep me blogging consistently, motivate new pet adventures and encourage imaginative photography during a very tough year for me personally. Although we made it through 2015 with no deaths in the family and I am settling into a good groove of making time for my new job and blogging, I decided to seek out a new photo challenge for 2016 to keep my pet adventures and the photographic documentation of those outings creative and fresh. After a lot of searching, the most inspirational photo challenge I found is the Dogwood Photography 52 Week Photography Challenge. It's week one and I have already been extremely challenged!
Dogwood Photography Photo Challenge Week 1, Portrait: Self Portrait
"Start things off right with a 'selfie'! Explore the self timer setting on your camera."

The first thing that appealed to me about the week one challenge is that I have never explored the self timer on my camera. Secondly, I have been wanting to try a fun selfie with myself and all five pets. Until discovering this photo challenge, it had never occurred to me that the timer would be the best way to capture some me and three, four and five pets fun. The photos could have been better composed, angled and lit, but for a bunch of pets and a human that have been relatively sedentary for the last week because the human has a few separated and fractured ribs, I think we did pretty good. And at the least, we got out and had fun together. That is always the point!

Black Coffee, From Steamy To Cold, In Just One Barking, Meowing, Squawking Moment {52 Snapshots of Life Week 33}

'Tis morning in Cascadia, ready to work
All around me the pets will casually lurk.
Black coffee, black laptop and telephone are near
Before sitting on the couch, black fur I must clear.

And white fur, grey fur, brown too; my task never ends
But it's worth it to work next to all my best friends.
The light as my laptop turns on almost dreamy
Sipping slow my coffee for it is still steamy.

The dogs have been walked, with the cat I have played
All the pets have been fed and the beds have been made.
As Leo's black beak munches breakfast from behind
All pets settle as I begin my daily grind.

When out on the porch, human foot steps can be heard
All rush to the door loudly except for the bird.
As dogs bark, cat meows, a fur storm at the door
Leo shouts "hello" until I can hear no more.

All that ruckus was made for just one tiny box
Delivered midst loud barking, meowing and squawks.
Calming all the pets with a plethora of treats
We can settle back in to our working time seats.

Three dog's black noses on the couch peacefully sigh
A pink cat nose covered warmly to sleep near by.
Cockatoo Leo is back to filling his crop
I again begin working at my black laptop.

My ears ringing from the box delivery attack
My much colder coffee not as tasty this black.
I would not have my work be any other way
Even loudly, pets always mean "have a nice day!"

Even if you don't work from home, how do your pets "help" you get the job done?
The steamy black coffee calm before the delivery storm
