West Seattle Summer Fest: Three Days, Five Pets & Surprisingly Little Mischief

Our neighborhood's pet friendly street fair started on Friday and ended last night. The high temperatures prevented us from spending as much time at the West Seattle Summer Fest as we had planned but I still expected to have a lot of dog, parrot and cat debauchery to share in today's post. At last years Summer Fest, Wilhelm attempted to swallow an entire hot dog he had found laying on the ground and Leo attended his first ever live music concert. But besides the hot sun, very little mischief occurred any of the three days we attended this local pet friendly event.

First, let me put "hot sun" into perspective. It was in the high eighties. For several days. My sincere apologies to people who live in regions where the sun is truly scorching but for us Cascadians, this weekend was hot. So on Friday and Saturday we attended the West Seattle Summer Fest in the evening when it was cooler. Even Amelia enjoyed a cool evening stroller ride through the street fair.

Yesterday we finally got out early enough to attend the West Seattle Summer Fest in the daylight. Even though Sunday was a little cooler, Wilhelm, Brychwyn and Huxley still spent a lot of time at the "Pet Junction." There were three kiddie pools for dogs to cool off in. We, of course, tried all three! (Did I mention there were people giving away copious amounts of dog treats to the canines in and around the pools?)

"What are you doing up there?"

"Wilhelm is up there?"
Just like anywhere we go, the Cascadian Nomads adventuring pets got a lot of attention. Jason said if he heard the word "menagerie" one more time, he wasn't going to come out with us anymore. And he said this after just two blocks of the street fair, on the first night. I'm glad he changed his mind because we heard "menagerie" a lot more times! We also heard "traveling circus" and " zoo," two of my favorite exclamations from strangers when out and about with Leo, Wilhelm, Brychwyn, Huxley and Amelia.

No.

Yes.
There is only one way for people to be distracted from the loveliness of the Cascadian Nomads canines, psittacine and feline and that is a puppy. Fortunately the most adorable puppy at the whole summer fest was with our neighbor and former obedience instructor. So instead of competing for attention, we created more of crowd stir by having Aussie meet Aussie*. This was an excellent photo and socialization opportunity for all involved! However, the socialization part went so well- the Blue Healer puppy tried really hard to get Leo to play with her- that the only decent photo I got was a mischievous stare down.

Besides making for an uneventful blog post, I am glad we had a relatively mischief free weekend. That "hot sun" was the only worry we had and it is way less of a burning star to fret about than most of the rest of the country had, I am sure. I could certainly wish for every weekend to be so full of conversation, music, pools and puppies... and I bet the Cascadian Nomads menagerie would all agree! (Sorry Jason.)

*Leo was hatched in Florida and his species is native to New Guinea but it was more fun to say he and the Blue Healer (born in Cascadia) were from the same place!

Looks like a fun place. I bet you do get a lot of comments. We get comments when three of us go somewhere! Hope you heat goes away soon. We don't like it either, but we have the a/c luckily in the house and right now it is a cold front which we are enjoying. Have a great week!

After this hot summer, Jason was mentioning that we might need A/C someday soon. It is usually a silly thing to have in Cascadia! I like the comments we get when we are out and about. There is nothing I like more than talking about my pets! But Jason prefers keeping a low profile... poor guy.

Looks like a lot fun, and I like the term menagerie for your gang! It was hot on the other side of the US as well ... we spent lots of time inside in the air conditioning and early morning walks to beat the heat.

I think menagerie described us perfectly! Maybe I should make Jason wear earplugs when we go out?

We spread the fun out over three days- it's pretty lucky to have such a fun festival so close to home!

Sounds like fun. I don't like high 80s either! Wish Rita would enjoy going to things like that. Sigh. Maybe someday.... That puppy is SOOOOO cute. I'm in love!

Well, if Brychwyn had been with us when we met the puppy, I wouldn't have gotten a photo because of all the loud corgi barking!

Wow! I'm so impressed that you venture out into the crowds with the whole gang! I don't even like venturing into crowds with just one pet! I love the picture of Leo and puppy--so cute!

Honestly, the stroller makes things a lot easier. During one very crowded part of the festival, All the pets except Huxley were in the stroller!

That pool looks so nice, especially when it's that hot out!

Having the pools was a great idea- I hope they do it again next year!

You should start charging admission! Or move to Portland, you'd fit right in. Our city motto is Keep Portland Weird after all.

Too true- I joked with one man who posed his son for a photo with Leo that I take cash or check. He kind of laughed. I guess it's just us keeping some weird for Seattle too!

I think most Aussies like myself would disagree that Sulfer Crested Cockatoos are native to New Guinea. Their origin is Australia and over time they have spread to New Guinea and other Indonesian Islands at least you won't convince Aussies of anything different :) :) : ) :).

I think Leo knows he's an Aussie deep down too! :)

Zoo, circus or menagerie--your group must have made quite an impact--and had fun to boot. Love your crew; they're so photogenic and well behaved.
