Training Games With A Cat? Amelia Tries 101 Things To Do With A Box | Positive Pet Training Blog Hop

When considering what kind of training game fun to have for this months Positive Pet Training Blog Hop 101 Things To Do With A Box challenge, I realized that cat Amelia and I have never played any cardboard box training games. The dogs and I have a lot of fun with boxes. They particularly like using boxes for practicing paws up tricks and playing scent games. Amelia likes to chew apart cardboard boxes so it had never before occurred to me that she and I could play cat training games with one. Trying out new things is exactly what the 101 Things To Do With A Box game and the Positive Pet Training Blog Hop are about, so Amelia and I spent some clicker training time with a box.

Like most training games with any pets, dogs, cats, parrots, etc, Amelia started the first session by offering her best/favorite trick, a simple "sit." I watched her patiently and as soon as she looked at the box, I clicked and treated.

Always the smart and curious kitty, Amelia caught on to the game quickly, receiving clicks and treats for sniffing the box. I soon upped my expectations and required her to be out of her sit for a click. The next step in our first training session was a bit of shuffling of both trainer an cat so she didn't just think she was supposed to touch her nose to only one corner of the box. When I changed my position in the room, Amelia went back to offering a sit but it didn't take long for her to go back to paying attention to the box. Just before I was about to end our first session, Amelia put her front paws on the box. I was so excited and gave her a super treat jackpot. I apologize for not having a photo of that moment but sometimes the training and the bonding with the pets is more important than pictures.* Sometimes.

I'm not certain where Amelia and I will go with our 101 Things To Do With A Box training games. One hope would be that having positive training fun with boxes could mean that Amelia will be less likely to destructively chew every cardboard thing she can get her teeth into. Imagining a life where all the packages we receive don't need to be immediately opened or locked in a closet makes me very happy indeed. Of course, having cat with a few more tricks to show off is certainly always fun plus Amelia appreciates any and all mental stimulation she can absorb. The more positive pet training fun we have around here, the better.
*My apologies for the quality of some of the photos in this post but sometimes authenticity is more important than perfection. These photos were taken by a stuffed into the corner Jason during Amelia's first 101 Things To Do With A Box training session.

Really cool to see cats can be positively trained too. I don't think a lot of people know about or consider that, since its common to think that cats are independent and low maintenance pets. :)

Thank you! Amelia expresses her independent feline nature by walking on my face at 4AM after loudly (meowing) carrying almost all of her toys into the room. All of this only happens IF she doesn't get enough playtime, outdoor time and some training time/mental stimulation in the day. So independent, yes, low maintenance, definitely no.

That looks like fun and we are sure you and Amelia will find more ways to box clever. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly

Thanks, Molly, You are correct... the creative box training game juices have been flowing. Using a bigger box that I could teach her to jump into or over on cue is at the top of my idea list right now. There's fun times ahead!

It's great to see a cat doing some training. I love it. We do some free shaping with our dog and a box, it's always so fun to watch her figure things out. With all the praise she seems (in my eyes) so proud when she does something new with shaping - it really tires her out mentally as well.

We love this post, thanks for sharing! The head peep really wants to teach Ashton to be like the cat in the youtube video that touches her paw to her mouth when she wants a treat. While that' has not exactly been a success since it's not really an everyday behavior you can reward her for doing on her own, it's amazing how quickly she has learned with reinforcement to wave a paw to request the treat. It's great to see you using the same kind of methods with such good results, too!

That is seriously impressive, especially as I'm not a cat person!

I've never heard of clicker training a kitty. What fun!

I tried the box game with my previous Lab, and she really had NO interest in the box but just kept throwing known tricks at me. I want to try it with Shyla - I have the feeling she'd be tons of fun with it.

Sorry that I missed the theme for this month!

Any cat I ever had would just want to climb in the box.

Not sure what to do with boxes. I sit in them, try to open them and push them around, but other than that, what else can I do. I know, maybe pick up my toys and put them away in a box...that's a good idea! =^,,^=
