Leashed Dog Friendly Lopez Hill And Spencer Spit State Park Hikes On Lopez Island, Washington

As a corgi, it is one of my jobs to love a good adventure. However, adventures that involve rides on a big, noisy boat called a ferry, are not always my favorites. Such raucous vessels seem to take the other Cascadian Nomads and I to some really fantastic places though. One such recent locale was Lopez Island in the San Juan Island archipelago. Jason had a few hours of work to do on the island, so Bethany, Huxley, Wilhelm, Bethany's mom's corgi Morgan and I rode along for the day.

It was a fairly long drive from my house in Seattle to the ferry dock in Anacortes so I reluctantly got out of the car on the boat to stretch my legs. Fortunately, we didn't spend long outside of the car and Bethany said the entire ride on the loud ship was a little less than an hour. It felt like longer to me, though.

Once we arrived on Lopez Island, Jason dropped Bethany, Wilhelm, Huxley, Morgan and I at Lopez Hill Preserve. We first hiked up a short gravel road then began on a trail through a small meadow. The meadow trail soon turned the rest of the hike was through a lush forest. We hiked past a crumbed old homestead, huge rocks and rested on thick, soft moss. It all smelled so good. Sniffing around old growth or second growth forests is every Cascadian dogs dream! Bethany says deer also like to rest on the same moss we dogs liked but we didn't see any. I'm actually very surprised about the lack of critters on our hike. Maybe they all knew hunting season in the park was starting soon. I don't like the idea of being in a park during hunting season any more than the critters and I am always safely on my leash. Not only were there no critters on our hike but we also didn't see any other people. Just the kind of hike a leash reactive corgi can relax and enjoy!

The forest was so quiet and peaceful and the hike had just the right amount of hill climbing to wear all of us fit dogs out.

While waiting for Jason to finish working, we got to have a dog nap at the bottom of Lopez Hill. It was a good thing we fit dogs rested because we got to go on another hike after Jason picked us up. Our second Lopez Island hike was a beach hike at Spencer Spit State Park. Washington State Parks are wonderful for dogs because as long as we are on leashes, we can go almost everywhere, even on beaches. Sadly, we were among the only dogs at the park obeying the law. There was even a dog in the fragile wildlife restoration area of the park that had signs specifically asking for no dogs. I did my best not to bark about it since I could tell Bethany and Jason were already upset enough. We continued on and enjoyed the gorgeous sunny day and stunning San Juan Islands views.

Since we Cascadian Nomads fit dogs were pretty worn our after to very different Lopez Island hikes, we napped in the car on the ferry. Those boats don't bother my large, sensitive corgi ears as much when I am in the car and especially not when I am sound asleep. Even though our Lopez Island day trip was a very fun fit dog outing and adventure, I think I remember having playtime when we got home. After that, however, it was time for me to do another job corgis are very good at; go to bed.

The End.

that does sound like the most wonderful place to go walking....I see you have a plant nibbler too....Denny does that - constantly sampling everything he passes.

Wilhelm gets so into grazing that he often spoils our photo poses. But as soon as the picture is taken, Huxley and I join him in the munching. Poor Morgan corgi wasn't quite sure why we liked eating the forest grass so much.

Those look like beautiful places to hike! We love the hikes where we see few people, too--it's always less stressful! I'm sorry that so many dogs/people weren't following the rules at the second park, though.

Yeah, the second park was a bit more stressful with all the off-leash dogs. I just want to play but it comes out as barking and lunging. The sad thing is that when so many people ignore the rule, that's when the rules get more strict and "no dogs allowed" signs go up. I hate those.

That looks like a great hike - almost worth that ferry ride. Jack & Maggie have never been on a ferry - I think Jack would be fine, but Maggie...if she knew that romp in the woods was on the other end she'd go for sure. Looking forward to the Walk Your Dog Hop!

Maggie is a bit more shy than I am but staying in the car on the ferry makes for a much happier trip. The vibrating, moving "ground" under my feet on the ferry is not fun. Good thing the ground in the woods was so perfect for sure!

Wow that was some hikes and phew luckily you got a nap in between for the dogs as they sure looked pooped out at the end. Pity no wildlife but as you say probably because it is the start of the hunting season. Have a fabulous Friday.
Best wishes Molly

I like naps on the bed but that forest floor was pretty comfortable too.

Fun adventure with the ferry and the walk. We haven't been on a ferry here in the US, but in Germany it was more common. It is always fun to walk in new places.

I prefer new places because I tend to be so busy sniffing that I don't get in trouble for barking!

What a great adventure. The ferry ride sounds like it was a little challenging.
Thanks for mentioning dog walking week, we will definitely be joining.

I think we have come to an understanding that I really prefer staying int eh car on the ferry. I might not like it if Huxley and Wilhelm go out without me though... we'll see what happens next time! I am looking forward to Walk Your Dog Week too. As you know, i love a good walk. I'm glad you'll be joining us!

Wow what a pretty place. Lucky dawgs. I don't blame you about being cautious during hunting season. Your season is earlier than ours. We stay out of the forest during firearm deer season (Nov 15-30). Archery and even muzzle loading are usually OK because of the way the hunters hunt and because they are generally much closer to the deer. If we do venture into the forest, we make sure to wear our orange!

We don't have many places nearby where hunting is allowed, so we don't even have orange to wear! But is an absolute must especially so early in the year when there are still so many leaves on the trees.

Beautiful. I'm adding Lopez Island on my list of places to go!

I love the pictures. I'm so impressed that you can get all the puppers to stay still in one spot long enough for a photo.

Wilhelm, Huxley and I are very well trained and I love to pose for a photo. Morgan is kind of a loose cannon but we tried to help him understand what Bethany wanted. We always enjoy time in the San Juan Islands but Bethany and Jason say we don't go there much anymore because of how it expensive the ferry ride is.

From sea to forest to sea to bed- what more could a dog want? Well, less noise and vibrating on that first sea part would have been better. But it was still a fun day.

I have been to the San Juan Islands a few times since I was a puppy. Jason and Bethany say they used to go a lot more when the ferry prices were less expensive. Mr. N would have loved that forest hike- maybe he'll come with us next time!
