Is there a best dog food for a big dog and a little dog? A young dog and an old dog? Dogs nutrition needs can vary- ask you vet! #GetHealthyHappyThere can be a big difference in each dogs nutritional needs
Typist: Bethany
I remember when my parents would shop for the best dog food. They would have a dog nutrition discussion with the veterinarian then do what they could to purchase healthy dog food. There weren't nearly as many options back then as there are now. There are even foods that can help manage certain health conditions. I try to follow the pet health model taught by my parents but all of the dog food choices out there can be staggering. Instead of being overwhelmed by it, I savor the opportunity to research and learn about what is best to fed my pets and why. I am also thankful for my relationship with my veterinarian. Throughout Tynan's life, my vet recommended changing dog food several times. I always transitioned Tynan from old food to new food gradually, in stages.

Gently switching foods was especially important with my cats. Changing cat food is particularly tough when you have had picky feline eaters with health issues like my first cat, Emily. Finding the best cat food is often more difficult for me because I didn't learn how to care for cats from my parents. I have had just my vet and my own research to help me discover all I could about cat nutrition. And I am still learning. What is a healthy cat food for one cat may not be perfect for another. Plus all pets nutritional needs change as they grow and age.

Cats and dogs can live together but they cannot dine together, they have different nutritional needs! #GetHealthyHappy
Sometimes it's easy to tell that two pets have very diverse nutritional needs but your vet knows best.
Part of admiring my pets individuality is respecting their unique and dynamic nutritional needs. I love all that I have learned about loving and caring for my pets from my parents but I am glad I have more healthy pet food options than they used to. Through consulting with my veterinarian, knowledge that my dogs and cats nutritional needs ebb and flow and willingness to put in the effort to gradually change their foods, I know I have many more memories to make with healthy, happy pets.

It has been my experience that many health issues can be significantly helped with proper nutrition. There's no healthier and happier than that!

Good advice on consulting with your vet. Hopefully examining foods is a little easier now with the SlimDoggy database...check ingredients and calories right from your desktop ;)

Not only are there way more options than there were when my parents were always searching for the right dog food but there are so many ways to research and cross reference what the vet suggests. Hopefully there will someday be as many easy ways to research cat food. Cat nutrition is surprisingly more difficult.

Good nutrition for our pets is extremely important. My cats seem to crave a change in diet more than my dog, but we always pick high quality, nutritious food. My dog is on a RX diet now and it's made by Hills.

When my last two cats were younger, I used to mix up their diet a lot but as they got older they became finicky and their diet options were more limited. I certainly think the pets like mixing it up and even with prescription diets there are nutritious choices available!

Nutrion is very important to me. I'm researching switching the dogs to raw.

Do lots of research, making sure your pups continue to have a balanced diet isn't always easy. Be sure to work closely with your vet on any diet change too!

Pets are also our family. We should take care of them especially their health.

I realize how important nutrition is after working at a healthy pet store focusing on all-natural nutrition. Switching Pug to a high-quality grain free food has actually reduced the number of seizures he has per year by half!

That is wonderful news! A grain-free diet was essential for Tynan with all his allergies and helped Emily stay happy and comfortable in her senior years. Both times the diet switch was recommended by my vet- it's one of the reasons I love her so!
