Don't Fall:  Pet Steps, A Ramp & Stacked Rocks {52 Snapshots of Life Week 45}

There are many reasons that the number one rule about life with short legged dogs is "no jumping." The little legs and long backs of dachshund Wilhelm and corgi Brychwyn cannot take the wear and tear of jumping on and off the couch and bed as easily as tall collie Huxley. Yet even my long legged dog knows how to use our pet ramp and stairs because pets and people of any size should always avoid a fall. As the dogs and cat age, knowing how to use the pet stairs and pet ramp are important for their continued adventure pet health. Since it is essential that Wilhelm and Brychwyn avoid the stress on their bodies that regular jumping can cause, I didn't wait until the pets were seniors to teach them how to use pet stairs and ramps. Despite my efforts, though, the dogs still jump and occasionally fall. Striving to minimize the risk of a fall with the pet stairs, ramp and a whole lot of fit dog time, the "no jumping" rule is more of a "jump carefully with your awesomely strong furry body" statute. If how often the dogs are on the couch and the bed between pet friendly adventures is a way to judge the pluses and pit-falls of our system, I'd say we're doing quite well. The only bad fall anyone has had is me!

Ramps can be so helpful! We had ramps and steps for Jasmine ever since her knee injuries. I find dogs are much mor comfortable using ramps than steps.

You are so right, Jana! I wish we had more ramps around but Jason and I have discussed making some that are the right height for the couch, window sill and chairs. The ramp to the bed gets used constantly but sometimes the steps to the couch become an obstacle for the dogs and cat to leap over.

Thanks for this pet safety reminder nomads! My senior dachshund has just started using a ramp and I do wish I had started him sooner.

The dog training studio where I used to work incorporated training pet ramps and stairs even to puppies. It is a skill that all dogs should learn at any age. I am glad your dachshund likes his ramp!

Your dogs are lucky to have such a caring and attentive owner. Falls are to be avoided for humans and dogs both.
