Chewing the Plaque Away with Dental Chews from Entirely Pets

Cascadian Nomads are reviewing C.E.T. Chews on behalf of BlogPaws Pet Blogger Network and Entirely Pets. Cascadian Nomads received the product reviewed for free and were compensated for our time but, as always, all opinions and views expressed are our own.
Typist: Bethany
Wilhelm, Brychwyn and Huxley love to chew. Cardigan corgis are notorious chewers, so his constant need to be chewing, similar to the cattle his ancestors have herded for centuries, is no surprise. Dachshund's and collies are not supposed to be as avid of chewers as Wilhelm and Huxley are so I like to use all three dogs love of chewing to my advantage and get their teeth clean!  Jason and I know we are supposed to be frequently brushing the dogs teeth but it just doesn't happen as often as it should. Their diet also helps but no one teeth cleaning method seems to be enough. Plus, Wilhelm has an under-bite, so his teeth need a particularly high amount of maintenance.
Since we regularly buy C.E.T. dental chews from our vet, I was really excited about this chew review opportunity from Entirely Pets. Of course, I trust that my vet sells a relatively safe product, but I do worry about impaction with rawhide. I am also picky about the source and how the rawhide was treated (formaldehyde? glue?) Receiving C.E.T. Chews from Entirely Pets is sort of like getting a second opinion on the healthy benefits of the chews. Entirely Pets is a vet run online pet supply retailer that has been in business for 14 years and say they "strongly believe the pet supplies we carry will provide your pet(s) with a long and healthy life."
But no matter what any vets say, there is always a risk in giving rawhide chews to the dogs. While it is good that C.E.T. chews do not tear or break apart, when the dogs swallow the softened rawhide after chewing a while, there is still a risk of impaction. I like that I can pick through a package of C.E.T. chews and find appropriate sizes and thicknesses for each dog. We never leave the boys unattended with any swallow-able chews and we never give them more than one a day so we can closely monitor for signs of impaction. They also always have big drinks after chewing, so be sure to have

fresh water available if you give these chews to your dog. To us, the benefits of chewing- better breath, less plaque, brushing a little less often- out weigh the risks. If this is not the case for you and your dog, there are plenty of dental chew options to chose from at Entirely Pets.

'R' Blood on the Tracks Boys love these chews! They always chew them long enough to get some plaque cleaned off their teeth (which is essential with any dental chews and I love that I get some help keeping their teeth clean (notice the very hard to brush backs of their teeth getting some chewing action in the photos.) Since I didn't pay for these chews like I usually do, I did a little experiment in hopes of easing my impaction fears. I soaked a chew in a bowl of water. After just 20 minutes in the bowl, the originally very hard chew was pliable. After two hours, I could roll up.

While this doesn't change the fact that rawhide is not fully digestible, it does mean it can get soft enough to pass through the digestive system pretty quickly. The risk of impaction is still there and I will continue to use the chews with caution but, just like my vet and the vets of Entirely Pets approval, this little experiment makes me feel a little less uneasy about giving C.E.T. Chews to the dogs. And how could I not give them these chews? Entirely Pets has a low price guarantee and just look at those happy boys chewing the plaque away!

Great review Bethany! I also really like these chews (which you can read about tomorrow). One of the vets I worked with liked these chews a lot, and would recommend them over other rawhide chews. I think she felt they were more digestible than others, although I tried searching a little bit about that and couldn't find any evidence for it. Either way, looks like your guys enjoy them!

Thanks, Ann. My mom's vet says that these are more digestible too and that is why I started getting them. Like I said in the review, no rawhide is really digestible but if it's cut and treated right, like the C.E.T. chews are, it is much safer for the digestive system than other rawhides. That must be what the vets mean about "more digestible." But you're right the dogs love them and we are careful so chew on!

OK the review was great but the pics were the best! Your dogs rock, mine wouldn't have sat still that long!
