A Cockatoo and His Pumpkin {52 Snapshots of Life Week 43}

When Leo is out and about I am often asked "what does he eat?" The sight of an adventuring triton cockatoo thrills many but all that is toted along inside his travel case can look puzzling. Leo always travels with at least one huge, dark, leafy green hanging in his Popemobile, a foraging toy full of pellets, a dish of spring water and a dish of fresh food. This fresh food is a spoonful of the casserole that Jason or I make for Leo each morning. We layer brown rice pasta, sprouted mung beans or lentils, winter squash, butternut squash or carrot baby food and unsweetened canned pumpkin into a small glass bowl. After 20 minutes in the toaster oven, we mix the hot dish with a small amount of plain, non-fat yogurt and chopped chard, kale or collard greens. We serve Leo his all organic casserole and he happily digs in. The types of baby food and pumpkin are chosen because of they are high in vitamin A. Serious health issues occur in parrots with vitamin A deficiency. Even birds like Leo who never eat seeds can suffer immune, tissue and organ trauma from a lack of vitamin A. So pumpkin is a delicacy in our house or when traveling, year round. The dogs also like pumpkin from the can or whenever Leo drops it. We are such a healthy bunch of Cascadians!

Nothing Is More Adorable Than A Sleepy Cockatoo {52 Snapshots of Life Week 35}

Nothing is more adorable than a sleepy cockatoo. Perhaps sleepy Leo is cute because he is less likely to surprise me with an ear piercing scream. Maybe when he gets sleepy I feel that I am doing a good job of keeping him active and stimulated. I could spend all day, every day watching Leo play, chew, climb, eat, drink, etc, but there is something about seeing my parrot settle in for a quiet roost during various times of the day that never fails to "aw." My little feathery ham for the camera, however, rarely lets me capture a shot of him fluffed up on one foot for nap time. This week, Leo was either often extremely tired or my determination to snap a sleepy shot made him relinquish his usual "no sleeping photos please" rule. In fact, as I type, he is making his version of "shh" (which is about ten times louder and much more gravely than most humans would consider a soothing "shh" sound.) Still, I am sticking with my earlier statement that he is a super cute, sleepy bird!

Another West Seattle Summer With Pets, Another Pet Friendly West Seattle Summer Fest {52 Snapshots of Life Week 28}

Yesterday, one of my Pilates classes chatted after class about all of the summer events that went on throughout Seattle neighborhoods over the weekend. They also discussed how pet friendly most of the events were especially now that the weather has cooled slightly. I was really happy to hear that Leo, Amelia, Huxley, Brychwyn and Wilhelm were not the only dogs, cat and cockatoo who got out to enjoy a summer festival. Wait. Leo and Amelia were probably the only cockatoo and cat who got out to enjoy a summer festival. At least they were the only cat and cockatoo we saw at the street fair and outdoor concerts at West Seattle Summer Fest. Regardless, all five Cascadian Nomads pets had a wonderful time and we saw a slew of other happy festival going dogs. We are so fortunate to have a fabulously fun pet friendly event in our neighborhood every summer and to be in a city where I am not the only lucky summer festival goer bringing the pets along.
