Typist: Bethany It was tough to leave Beavertail Hill State Park. The camp hosts and the Montana Fish and Wildlife ranger stopped by with their dogs and to say hello to ours. This was a dog and family friendly campground. We slept so well next to the Clark Fork River and woke with energy to hike the self-guided nature trail loop one more time. The drive through Montana was long but so beautiful. There were mountains everywhere! I kept the windows down so the dogs could sniff from their crates but they seemed to just sleep the drive away. We made it all the way to Pompey's Pillar National Monument before taking a nice, but hot break. At Pompey's Pillar, dogs are allowed on the Yellowstone River trail and around the bottom of the pillar. The dogs could not come in the interpretive center or up the scaffold to the top of the pillar. This was an excellent unexpected stop and we're glad we found it. We arrived at Makoshika State Park in Glendive, Montana just before sunset. And what lucky Nomads we are because the sunset was spectacular! We wandered around the park and campground in the twilight but I am really looking forward to a hike through this beautiful park tomorrow. Montana has been a real pleasure to visit so far. Please forgive any & all rough spots in this post as it has been done on mobile from the road! We will be reading and enjoying your comments but, due to being on the road, it will be difficult for us to respond right away. Thanks for understanding and for coming along on this great adventure.

Ahh, you drove through my part of the state. I grew up in Miles City (and my father is still in Billings). I hope you noticed that the second part of the state was Big Sky Country- no real mountains, just land and sky as (literally) far as the eye can see.

Never been to Montana. Would love to go. It looks fabulous. And that Pompey's Pillar looks pretty cool!
