Dogs That Have Fun Together, Stay Fit Together

Yesterday, Brychwyn, Huxley and I went with Bethany to visit Lucie and Morgan. We five dogs always have a really great time together but yesterday I noticed how much exercise we get when we all meet. Maybe it is because Bethany had a cold for a few days and our fit dog time has been limited. Maybe it is because it was such a beautiful sunny day and we had lots of time to play. Or maybe it is because I am such a fit dog and I like to keep track of what I do for exercise. Whatever the reason, I couldn't help but notice the variety of exercise we fit dogs got while just having fun together.

Fit dog time is fun!

Lucie welcomes us to her yard.
Greetings: Just saying hello can be good fit dog exercise... especially for the smaller dog! I'm kidding, of course. All dog greetings use a variety of body positions that are great fit dog conditioning.

Morgan says "hi" to Huxley.

Morgan gives Huxley a hug.

Morgan gets low...

... so he can give Huxley a kiss!
Wrestling: To the untrained eye it might look like dogs only exercise our jaws when wrestling. But we actually gain a lot of flexibility, agility, core strength and balance when wrestling.

Lucie demonstrates a pre-wrestling stretch.

Only a fit dog as agile as me can pull of a tackle like this one.
Picture
Morgan and Brychwyn are working out more than just their jaws.
Picture
Morgan 's balancing skills make him a tip-top wrestling fit dog.
Props: Whether it is a ball, a toy or a stick, we fit dogs can think of a way to use it for exercise. Huxley played a fetch with a ball yesterday then he and I had an enthusiastic tug with a stick. (When you see the last stick photo, I know what you might think but you're probably wrong. I never lose a tug. I was just letting Huxley get some chew time in- chewing is also good exercise!)

I did not lose the tug. I never lose a tug.
Chase: The last but definitely not the least of all the ways dogs stay fit together is playing chase. While I honestly like any joyful greeting, vigorous wrestling and an ambitious tug, chase is my most favorite form of exercise. And best of all, merry hellos, epic wrestling matches and impressive tugs all include chasing!

After Morgan kissed Huxley "hello," Huxley chased Morgan.

Lucie and I demonstrate chase as a part of wrestling.
Picture
Lucie runs pretty fast for an eight-year-old. It's because she's a fit dog!
Picture
Whoever wins a tug gets chased. But just because I am chasing Huxley doesn't mean he won the tug.
Brychwyn, Huxley, Lucie, Morgan and I sure did have some amazing fit dog time together yesterday afternoon. As always, I certainly look forward to more. Are there any exercises that we could do together that we forgot? I would certainly like to know! We five fit dogs are always looking for new ways to have fun plus we want to make sure we do everything we can to stay healthy, lean and fit.

Thanks, Molly. You would like Lucie and Morgans yard too- there are tree rats galore!!!

My Cardigans are such rough players, it makes me cringe to watch them play! They will be running full speed ahead and tackle one another. The thud they make when they hit the ground scares me!

Sometimes you make me wish we had two cardis, Taryn. Poor Wilhelm gets "thudded" like that by Brychwyn. I know Wilhelm is tough but he is so little!

Your message is a bit similar to mine today. One dog or two can have lots of fun, but the more dogs, the more variety and fun. The only thing to remember is if you have the same dogs for a time, they get bored too, so it is always good to have a human around to keep the fun going by starting a chase, tossing a ball etc. Fit doesn't have to mean a formal workout!

Yeah... we don't play unless there is a human present!

Chase is the most fun. Although SlimDoggy Jack isn't into it as much as our prior dogs were.

Thanks for joining FitDog Friday!

this is why having more than one dog is a good thing - not only for just company but because play keeps them well exercised :)

Very true, sometimes we only see one type of exercise going on when in fact there's much more happening! :) Thanks for sharing!

My dogs' favorite game is Chase. Sometimes it's our cats' favorite game, too!
