The Cascadian Nomads are joining BlogPaws in celebrating Senior Pets Month. All month long, we're sharing photos and stories of the senior pets we have been fortunate enough to share our lives with. Please check back tomorrow to see and read more about our very first precious senior pet, Bobbie Birdie (1991-2010.)

Leo thinks being old at 19 is funny but it is a ripe old age for a cockatiel!

You know Mom has been pondering over that constitutes a senior pet - what is the formula. Some doggies can live to be 18 and some only 8 - when does either become senior? Love the birdies

That is a good question- I have always just left solving the when are they seniors equation up to the vet! I was absolutely shocked when the vet suggested Tynan was a senior at 5 (but he was a 65 pound dog and the vet felt some arthritis in his hips) yet I had to keep reminding the vet of Bobbie's age since he didn't seem like a senior at all!

Bobbie is a cutie pie. We had a cockatiel for years. When it was gone, it was a tough decision not to get another. They're sweethearts.

Thanks, Flea. I think I will be ready for another one someday but I will wait until I don't still imagine Bobbie chirping sometimes.

Thank you, Katherine. I wish I had more digital pics of him! I need to get to scanning the old prints of when he and I were younger.

Aw what a cutie! For a minute I was surprised to see you had a cockatiel too until I read the caption.

Our avian vet used to call us the ark; 2 birds, 2 cats, 2 dogs. Someday we'll be ready for another bird.

What a sweet photo of Bobbie on the Christmas tree! I look forward to reading more about him. Don't some birds live even longer than that? I'm not sure which type I'm thinking I heard that about.

Birds are the opposite of dogs, where the larger they are the longer their expected lifespan. Well cared for small parrots like Budgies can live to 15 and my avian vet says she now sees cockatiels living to 25. Medium sized parrots like African Grays live 50-60 years and the large macaws can live 60-80 years. Leo is likely in the in the around 60 years category.

What a sweet photo. Gosh, I should have mentioned the Sr. Pets Month thing on my blog yesterday since we posted a senior pic! D'oh!

Your photo was from 2009 too! And Bailey looks like a senior with her lovely silver muzzle. Bobbi just had a darker beak as he aged.
