A Long Walk In A Downpour And Only The Dogs Got Wet

Out in the rain in my Wander Wrap™ Long with Huxley.
Typist: Bethany
As a Cascadian, I am required to tell you that I don't mind the rain. However, that isn't entirely true. I don't mind the usual ten months of constant showers and mist here in Cascadia. I think sideways rain is entertaining. But I don't like torrential, bouncing up off the ground, pouring rain. These kinds of deluges aren't the kind of rain we normally get but it has been happening a lot lately. Fortunately, I bought myself a Wander Wrap™ and a Wander Wrap™ Long from Wander Goods at Christmas time. Now I can actually walk the dogs in a downpour and not get wet!

Now, don't get me wrong. I would and have walked the dogs in crazy rainstorms and gotten very wet and survived. But
having Wander Wrap™ makes heading out for fit dog time in a
downpour easier and more convenient. Since I can simply snap my Wander Wrap™ rain skirt around whatever I am already wearing, the dogs and I can just head out any time. And my Wander Wraps™ are not just waterproof, they are also wind proof and very warm. During our unseasonable dry and extremely cold January, wrapping my legs in a Wander Wrap™ was like wearing a blanket out on our fit dog walks. On our recent trip to Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon, my Wander Wraps™ served as excellent wind blockers as well as keeping me dry for the car rides on our road trip. The car still smelled a lot like wet dogs, though. But I like the smell of wet dogs. No. Seriously, I do.
Picture
Wearing my Wander Wrap™ as a wind blocker on a cold day at Long Beach.
Having traveled with both of my Wander Wraps™ and having had the opportunity to wear them in some very extreme weather conditions, I highly recommend Wander Goods rain skirts. They are well made and durable. The skirt snaps over whatever you are wearing and has an elastic back that makes it very comfortable. I brought both of my rain skirts on our recent road trip since I wasn't sure how long it would take for them to dry but they went from dripping wet to wearable in a couple of hours. And the nice thing about bringing both skirts is that even my larger, Wander Wrap™ Long packs lightly. The heavy duty plastic zipper closure pockets have room for my dog treat bait bag and my gloves. Speaking of my gloves, that is the only flaw I now have in my awesome fit dog outdoor gear. If anyone has any lightweight, waterproof glove suggestions, I very much appreciate you leaving a comment.

Staying dry while playing in the yard.
In conclusion, we all know that weather happens. Rain, sleet, wind, cold, mud and more are all possibilities when out and about with our fit dogs. But we can't let any weather that is safe to be out in stop us from keeping our dogs fit. Sometimes having the right gear can make all the difference in being able to get out and stay out for quality fit fog time. I hope that knowing about Wander Goods Wander Wraps™ rain skirts might help some of you get out more in those March and April and beyond showers with your dog! Your dogs might not stay dry, but you will and, believe me,  that makes for more fun fit dog time.

We agree a bit of rain is OK but we have had way too much but luckily it is mainly at night or in the wee hours so we still go out for our muddy walks. I don't like heavy rain so that is the only time I don't go out as it is not my thing. You really are an all weather troop. Bravo to you. Have a fabulous Friday.
Best wishes Molly

Thanks, Molly, I didn't used to be such a weather trooper but if the dogs don't get out we drive each other crazy!

Rain is something we really dislike. Any other weather is not so bad but rain is yuck. Even though we dislike it, we still walk in it. Mom has a rain suit that she wears, pants, coat with hood, rain shoes, in the winter she has her boots, ski pants and jacket. An outfit for every kind of weather. Luckily, we don't get much of that cold rain you have, we had that in Europe and it was the worst but we still were out there.

Too much need for special outfits makes me tired just thinking about getting dressed and then I won't go out! I don't mind getting a special outfit on for the snow but I need to just be able to simply go out in the rain. Your mom is way more of a weather trooper than I!

I wonder how Slimdoggy Steve would look in the wrap skirt? Would he even care as long as he stayed dry?

Luckily, we don' get too much rain so we might never find out...

Wow, that's pretty cool. The wrap sure would protect my clothes when Rocco jumps up on me (yes, he does that!). I don't have any personal experience with thin, waterproof gloves, but I was curious and did a quick search and it looks like there are lots of choices.
Your pals,
Diane and Rocco

I love that this rain skirt protects my clothes from Brychwyn's jumpy paws too! (I tried to get a photo of him jumping on me but of course when i wanted him to... *eye roll*) Thanks for letting me know about the glove search. I hadn't gotten to looking any thing up; I am still in the just complaining phase!

dry, overcast or sunny - that is about the only options for going walking...love watching it and hearing it rain - but not walking in it :)

I love the fresh feeling of being out in the rain! But it has to be convenient; no pulling off drenched clothes when I get home!

Although I do not ski, I own a pair of ski bibs for winter walking. They allow me to go for walks on all but the coldest of days. I can comfortably stay outside at 10 or 15 degrees for an hour or more. They block all the wind to chest height and then my jacket/scarf/hat take care of the rest. I wear ski gloves as well, but nothing seems to save fingers tips for the long haul. And, on my feet, to keep my toes warm, a pair of heavy duty hunting socks and a pair of Merrell winter boots. Dressed like that, there are no excuses for taking a short walk!

Is it wrong that your outfit description makes me hear "I can't put my arms down?" But you're right, that outfit is too much work for just a walk around the block!

Great photos! Some dogs are very picky when it comes to weather but I truly believe its all in how you approach it! Make it fun :)

Wilhelm hates going out in the rain and Brychwyn can be a bit of a price(ss) about it too. But you're right: if I'm happy, they're happy!

We have our rain boots and rain coats. But I've never seen the Wander Wraps before, it seems like a good alternative for rainy days.Thank you for sharing it and have a great weekend.

Cool product that I've never heard of before. Fortunately, we don't have too many rainy problems here. I think we're in drought status usually =/ Love the idea of something that goes around your legs.

I understand we live in totally different climates but there are 2 reasons we don't go for a walk: rain and ice. I think most dogs hate rain as much as me, I won't even go to the bathroom when its raining. I guess I am lucky I don't live in the NW! Love Dolly

That's a cool product! :) Umbrellas can be so cumbersome and sometimes don't even prevent you from getting soaked. This item looks like it'd do the trick! :)

Wow, a rain skirt. How cool! Sorry, I have no clothing tips. The main thing we need here is sun protection! This made me remember the rain gear everyone wore when we lived in Bermuda. OMG, the ugliest stuff ever. Used to hate to have to wear that stuff but it was the only way to stay dry on a moped in a downpour!

I just wear my knee-high Hunter boots and a rain coat. What do you wear shoe-wise?

I have a couple of shoe choices- waterproof hiking boots (but they are only ankle high,) water resistant synthetic snow boots (best for warm but not water) and water resistant leather riding boots (best for water but not for warm.)

My favorite weather gear are my snow boots! I slip and slide all over the ice, but I have NEVER fallen in them! It's probably like the children's book about the magic ballet slippers and they aren't that special, but I believe in them :) That skirt looks really interesting--I've never seen anything like that!. Barley won't leave the house in the rain--she stands in the doorway and plants her little feet and won't budge no matter how much bribing I do, so I don't think I'd get much use out of one, but it would definitely be handy if I had a dog that wasn't such a diva ;)

Gloves - check out kayaking gloves. I love mine because they are thin, waterproof, and best of all warm.

Thanks so much, Amy! I have a pair of neoprene kayaking gloves that are super warm but they have curved fingers for proper paddle grip. I will look for something similar... what a great idea!

Well, we do have rain jackets and even pants ... NOW. Sometimes we use them, sometimes we don't bother. If the weather is warm enough, we often don't.

I still remember one of Jasmine's play dates with her best buddy. We just met in the park and it started pouring. Within a minute we were totally drenched. Well, couldn't get any wetter, right? So we stayed out for the intended length of the play date.

I tell you, though, I couldn't be wetter if I fell into a lake. Even the unmentionables! It is very difficult trying to get off such wet clothes, I tell you.

I have a Pilates student who tore her latissimus dorsi dragging off wet clothes, Jana! It is flat out dangerous. But you're correct that sometimes it just doesn't matter and is even plain fun to get soaked! As I get older though, I have noticed that not matter how warm it is, I am more susceptible to colds when I play in the rain. :(

I have never seen a product like that before! The closest Aussie version might be the Drizabone! But yours looks like a much more lightweight version :) Hope you get some good weather soon!
