Wilhelm, Brychwyn and Huxley love to chew. Cardigan corgis are notorious chewers, so his constant need to be chewing, similar to the cattle his ancestors have herded for centuries, is no surprise. Dachshund's and collies are not supposed to be as avid of chewers as Wilhelm and Huxley are so I like to use all three dogs love of chewing to my advantage and get their teeth clean! Jason and I know we are supposed to be frequently brushing the dogs teeth but it just doesn't happen as often as it should. Their diet also helps but no one teeth cleaning method seems to be enough. Plus, Wilhelm has an under-bite, so his teeth need a particularly high amount of maintenance.
Since we regularly buy C.E.T. dental chews from our vet, I was really excited about this chew review opportunity from Entirely Pets. Of course, I trust that my vet sells a relatively safe product, but I do worry about impaction with rawhide. I am also picky about the source and how the rawhide was treated (formaldehyde? glue?) Receiving C.E.T. Chews from Entirely Pets is sort of like getting a second opinion on the healthy benefits of the chews. Entirely Pets is a vet run online pet supply retailer that has been in business for 14 years and say they "strongly believe the pet supplies we carry will provide your pet(s) with a long and healthy life." But no matter what any vets say, there is always a risk in giving rawhide chews to the dogs. While it is good that C.E.T. chews do not tear or break apart, when the dogs swallow the softened rawhide after chewing a while, there is still a risk of impaction. I like that I can pick through a package of C.E.T. chews and find appropriate sizes and thicknesses for each dog. We never leave the boys unattended with any swallow-able chews and we never give them more than one a day so we can closely monitor for signs of impaction. They also always have big drinks after chewing, so be sure to have |
